In 2011, Liimattalan loma built a laavu lean-to at Säkkimäki, the highest point of Puumala’s southern archipelago, which anyone can use freely. The lean-to has a campfire site and logs, but it’s a good idea to bring your own matches and kindling. The hill offers great views of Lake Saimaa, and in good weather you can even see as far as Lappeenranta. Everyone is responsible for keeping the lean-to open to all as a hiking destination. When you leave, please take everything you brought with you, and make sure the environment is clean. Liimattalan loma and nature thank you!
Other significant nature sites in Puumala are the Norppapolku trail, which has even received national recognition, and the Liehtalanniemi eco-museum on Niinisaari, Liimattala’s neighbouring island. More information about these and other activities in Puumala can be found at visitpuumala.fi.
All of Liimattalan loma’s cottages are located on the shores of Lake Saimaa, so you can go fishing almost from the cottage terrace. Lure fishing permits are available at www.eraluvat.fi/kalastus/kalastusmaksut-ja-luvat.html. You can ask Liimattalan loma for net and fish trap markers. Both Puumala and Kyläniemi waters have ringed seals, so net fishing is prohibited during the early summer.
If you like vendace or other fish but don’t want to go fishing yourself, visit Kalakontti in Puumala. The Kalakontti stall is located at Puumalan alatori market from Midsummer to late summer. For information on other sales times and the selection available, visit kalakontti.fi. Local fisherman Jari Häkkinen provides the vendace needed in Kyläniemi. You can fetch fish from him; to order, call +358 40 75 61 750.
The 60 km long Puumala archipelago route was opened in summer 2017 and the 154 km long Saimaa archipelago route in summer 2020, making it possible to cycle around Lake Saimaa. Thanks to the ferry, the two routes can be connected from Lintusalo to Sarviniemi. More information about the scenic routes at visitpuumala.fi, where places on the ferry can be booked. Nor is lack of a bicycle a problem. Saimaa Bikes in Puumala rents both electric and hybrid bikes. For more information, visit saimaabikes.fi.
